Docked at Limassol, Cyprus. The city spreads for 10 miles along the coast
and is the largest seaside resort
on the island. At the foothills of the Troodos mountains is where most of
the country's grapes are grown (I can vouch for the quality of the wine
...).
We visited the ancient city Kingdom of Amathus. High on the cliff a temple
was built to Aphrodite and Adonis, excavations are still continuing.
Our next stop was the medieval castle of Limassol built by the Byzantines in
1,000 AD. In it's chapel is where Richard the Lion Heart allegedly married
Princess Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 and crowned her Queen of England -
the first coronation and royal marriage to take place outside England. The
museum houses a variety of antiquities from 400 to 1820 AD.
Limassol is very clean and caters to tourists from all over the world.
Next stop Turkey
Thanks Barry & Louise D.
